Deck Cleaning Atlanta, GA Circa 2001

Since 1998 Atlanta deck doctor has specialized in deck cleaning in Atlanta, GA: Whether your deck is bare wood, painted or stained the most important step in the deck restoration process is the cleaning. Contaminants such as mold, mildew, white and black fungus (what causes wood rot) are living organisms that, if not chemically and mechanically removed (pressure washing) will remain on your deck’s surface until the damage is done (wood rot).

An easy, sure-fire method to keep your deck healthy is to clean it at least once a year. We typically encourage home-owners to get on the schedule after pollen season, that way it becomes a routine. In a perfect world (in Atlanta, at least) a deck should be cleaned after pollen season, and a second time after all the leaves have fallen in late fall. This is especially important if your deck lies below a dense tree canopy. Tree leaves, tree debris caught between deck boards is a major culprit for wood rot. Not cleaning between your deck floor-boards is the equivalent of not flossing.

There are many methods to clean a deck, and we won’t go into the process, but we use a surfactant, a cleaning agent (could be caustic in nature, or as gentle as simple green)  and low pressure. We usually lower the pressure to anywhere from 1000 to 2000 PSI. Low pressure and proper deck cleaning detergents will remove even the most stubborn of stains.

Along with keeping your deck healthy, cleaning a deck will reveal if you have early signs of rot. Black stains on a deck floor (or white stains for that matter) are a sure-sign that a surface is remaining wet for prolonged periods of time. This usually happens for many reasons, but it is always helpful to ensure that your gutters are not overflowing onto your deck. Overflowing gutters (whether under-sized for your roof pitch, or because they are full of debris) can cause moisture issues with your deck, as well as  your foundation (water intrusion). Cleaning your deck has other benefits such as not allowing mold to compromise your solid stain finish (mold & mildew feed off paints and stains, weakening the finish). So it is always a good idea to clean your deck frequently.
